Bagtag.

Even with sophisticated baggage sorting systems in place, luggage still gets lost. Bagtag is a product designed to alleviate the stress of traveling and provide users with peace of mind regarding the location of their checked luggage. The Bagtag system consists of a Bluetooth LE baggage tag and a mobile application. The pair of products tracks the whereabouts of users luggage and provides contextually aware notifications at the baggage claim.

More than just a tag.

Bagtag uses Bluetooth Low Energy (iBeacon) to cast a signal up to 30m, providing you with the location of your bags at many points throughout your travel day. If Bagtag can’t connect to your bag, it will try and locate the luggage using the position of other Bagtag users. If your luggage gets lost, Bagtags printed QR code can help reunite bags with their owners, all through a simple scannable profile.

UI / UX Wireframing

The Bagtag application was designed to present users with an extremely efficient method of checking the status of their checked luggage. The information presented and bold colour pallet allow for quick glancable information to be received and processed while standing around a crowded baggage carousel.

Application Hierarchy

The Bagtag application was built using principles from Google’s material design guidelines, resulting in an application that creates a sense of context through the use of subtle layering techniques. The bold graphics and colours create a visual hierarchy of interaction and bring emphasis and meaning to primary interaction elements.

Pairing Process

To pair a new Bagtag with a users account, you simply scan the unique QR code on the back of the product and enter some basic bag information. The tag will then be added to your profile, and you can access it’s location data whenever you want.

The unique QR code can also be used for bag identification. If a bag is lost the QR code can be scanned. This will allow the user to contact the individual who found the bag and arrange for a safe return.

Network of Users

Due to battery constraints Bagtag doesn’t use GPS or cellular data to calculate the location of users possessions. Instead Bagtag works by creating a network of users smartphones that are continuously searching for the Bluetooth signal from surrounding Bagtags. As the number of users grows the accuracy of Bagtags location tracking increases.

Simple Construction

Bagtag is designed to withstand all of the tossing, shaking, rattling and crashing that baggage incurs. The shell of Bagtag is built from PC-ABS plastic and will protect the internal components of the tag for the life of the product. The clamshell construction allows for a user replaceable CR2032 battery and a snap fit closure mechanism. Once closed the silicon strap can be stretched over the housing further protecting the internal components.

Considered Details

The tag itself is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible allowing it to blend in will a wide variety of luggage styles. The rounded contour helps avoid catching and snags and allows the tag to self orient on almost any luggage size. The status light on the front of the device allows the user to quickly check the battery status of the devices while also providing visual feedback at the baggage claim.

Branded for Airlines

Due to the inexpensive construction of Bagtag, the electronic luggage tag could be custom branded for a number of different airlines and offered as a perk to first class travellers or members of frequent flyer programs. The logos could be pad-printed on the front of the device and a corresponding coloured strap could be produced.
